Customizing character in the game "The Secret World" is not the focus of the game. Male and Female character customization is quite limited compared to other MMORPG's like Tera, Aion, Perfect World, Age of Wushu and others.
You are limited to selecting pre-designed choices which can be around 5-7 selections for the head type, lips, jaw, nose, and eyebrows. If you wish your toon to look like a cute teenager from Japan, I'm sorry, its not gonna happen. I would say that all of the choices (for females at least) would look like they're somewhere between 28-35 years of age.
There's a wide selection of hair styles though. However, if you are someone who likes your toon to have really long hair, the longest would be above shoulder length.
As for the make-up, there's light to really heavy make-up, and face paints that you can change the shade color to.
The game at least tried to make a variety of tops for female character customization. You can see spaghetti strapped tops, tank tops, tee's, long sleeves, uhh bras? Would give you 3-4 recolors of the same design. I find this very limited. As for the coats, meh. There are 2-3 good ones but the rest aren't really that okay. For the legs, no mini-skirts or skirts, you're pretty much stuck with jeggings, leggings, cargo pants, 3 super short shorts, and female slacks. For the shoes, they are all closed shoes and sneakers, no sandals, stilettos, high heels, etc.
But that's because that's not the focus of the game. The graphics when you start playing is really good. The reason for the limited selection as far as customization is concerned is because cinematics all throughout the game would really show your character as how you customized it. This will give you the feel of "hey, this is me in the story!" which is important.
If I'm to review the character customization feature of The Secret World, it will get 4/10 from me.
